Drumlanrig Castle, 5 miles, one of Scotland’s grandest Renaissance buildings, is the venue for many events throughout the year. The bicycle was invented in the tiny hamlet of Keir Mill and this is one of the best places to cycle in the UK with the internationally recognised 7 stances and the RM bike trail nearby. The gorgeous beaches of the Solway coast can be reached by car in only 40 minutes, ideal for a picnic in secluded sandy bays. Explore further along the coast to Wigtown for the Book Festival in September or Dundrennan for the Wickerman Festival. Many historic houses and gardens to enjoy in the area and Galloway Forest Park is famed for its "Dark Sky".
