Glen Mallie, Fort William,Inverness shire,Scotland Glen Mallie - (Fort William, Inverness shire) - Delightfully situated at the base of the Caledonian Canal and sitting at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain range in Britain, this cosy, well presented cedar wood lodge is ideally placed to explore Fort William and the surrounding area - known as the Outdoor capital of the UK. Glen Mallie is one of five lodges set in landscaped gardens adjoining the owner's working croft farm on the shores of Loch Eli and Loch Linnhe. Enjoy a meal and a dram at the local pub by the side of the Caledonian Canal and watch boats negotiate the incredible flight of lock gates, known as Neptune's staircase. This property is perfectly placed for enjoying a wealth of outdoor activities, suitable for all ages and abilities. Climbing and hill walking in the Nevis range, mountain biking on the World Championship course (the Mountain Biking World Championships are held here annually), fishing in lochs, rivers and sea, golf an numerous water sports are all on the doorstep. Thistle Lodge, Invergarry,Inverness-shire,Scotland Thistle Lodge - (Invergarry, Inverness-shire) - In a wonderfully scenic location in the heart of the Great Glen, this small group of south-facing Scandinavian pine log lodges all have superb panoramic views of Loch Lochy and the mountain range beyond. To the rear, Ben Tee rises to nearly 3000 ft, ideal for climbing and walking. The Great Glen long distance trail passes the entrance to the chalet park and is very popular with walkers, cyclists and mountaineers. Free fishing is available on Loch Lochy and the use of a boat with ghillie can be arranged at extra cost. Permits are also available for salmon and trout fishing on surrounding rivers and lochs. Water sports centre 3 miles and in the winter months, skiing and snow-boarding can be enjoyed at Nevis Range. This is also a good central base for exploring the majestic scenery and many historic castles and monuments which lie along the Great Glen from Inverness to Fort William. Horse-riding and golf are available at Fort Augustus, where cruises on the Caledonian Canal can also be enjoyed. For those interested in natural history, the area abounds with wildlife - deer, osprey, pine martens, golden eagles and buzzards, to name a few. The pine martens resident near the lodges regularly visit the verandahs to be fed their favourite titbits of a jam or peanut butter piece. Seasonal pub 1.5 miles, small shop 3 miles, general store and pubs at Invergarry (5 miles). The lodges are beautifully sited at the top of a steep slope and have been double glazed and furbished with new furnishings and double glazing throughout to create a warm, welcoming and very comfortable atmosphere. The last half mile to the lodges is on a rough track road. A stock-proof fence surrounds the 5 acre area in which the lodges are sited. The pebbled beach can be reached via a gate leading down a steep embankment to the lochside.Thistle is a particularly spacious two storey lodge with a large private furnished deck at the entrance. 1 double and 1 twin bedroom upstairs; ground floor living area is open plan to a full length observatory / conservatory with spectacular views all year.
